Bridging Research and Policy: Advancing the Fight Against Antimicrobial Resistance Through Cross-Sector Collaboration

A New Milestone in My Research Journey I am honored to share that I have been awarded the Academy of Medical Sciences Cross-Sector Experience Award, delivered in partnership with the University of Leeds and The One Health Trust. This prestigious opportunity marks an exciting new chapter in my professional journey, enabling me to expand my impact beyond academic research and into the policy sector. Researching Antimicrobial Resistance and Environmental Health Over the years, my research has focused on critical global health challenges, including antimicrobial resistance (AMR), microbiomes, and environmental health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly Bangladesh and India. These interconnected issues have significant implications for public health, healthcare systems, and sustainable development. While generating high-quality scientific evidence remains fundamental, translating research findings into practical policies and interventions is equally essential to create meaningful and lasting change. Expanding Beyond Academia This award offers a unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience within the policy landscape through collaboration with The One Health Trust. By working closely with experts operating at the science-policy interface, I look forward to developing new skills in policy translation, understanding evidence-informed decision-making, and exploring how scientific research can more effectively support public health action. Strengthening the Pathway from Evidence to Impact I was particularly encouraged by the selection panel’s recognition of the strong potential for translating my research into policy impact. As my work increasingly examines the intersections between antimicrobial resistance, environmental change, and global health, this experience will help strengthen the pathway from scientific discovery to real-world implementation. Bridging the gap between research and policy is critical for addressing complex health challenges, especially in resource-constrained settings where evidence-based interventions can significantly improve outcomes. Looking Ahead I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Academy of Medical Sciences, the University of Leeds, The One Health Trust, and Dr. Erta Kalanxhi for their support and confidence in my work. I am excited to embark on this new journey, learn from colleagues working at the forefront of science and policy, and contribute to advancing evidence-driven solutions for some of today’s most pressing global health challenges.

Moments of wonder rise if we choose to look up

#BerlinReflection Even in the heart of a bustling city steeped in history, moments of wonder rise—if we choose to look up. This photo, captured at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, reminded me of something essential in research and leadership: the importance of stepping outside our daily grind and shifting our perspective. These bubbles, fragile yet bold, floating freely above one of the world’s most enduring symbols of resilience, reflect the path we take as scientists—navigating uncertainty, driven by curiosity, and grounded by purpose. In AMR research and global health, we often focus deeply—on data, on policy, on impact. But perspective is just as critical. It allows us to see connections others might miss, to challenge norms, and to imagine new solutions in the face of complexity. So here’s a reminder: stay focused, persevere, but don’t forget to look up. Sometimes, the spark for your next breakthrough comes when you least expect it.

Leadership & Gardening – A Beautiful Analogy

As I tended to my garden this morning, the parallels between leadership and gardening became strikingly clear. Both involve nurturing, overcoming obstacles, acknowledging achievements, and making timely decisions. Gardening has always held a special place in my heart, offering a tranquil escape and moments of profound reflection, especially during my early morning routines. Attending Prof Lesley Dobrée’s coaching session as part of the #EntrepreneurialLeadership program was a privilege. The analogy of leadership to gardening deeply resonated with me, highlighting the continual need for nurturing, patience, and deliberate growth in leadership. Embracing this program has been a rewarding experience, and I am sincerely appreciative of the journey it has set me on. Gratitude to Jo Howorth, Amanda Graham, and David Wilkinson for the opportunity to participate in this enriching program. And thanks to ncee and @Karen Biscombe I’m sure my fellow peers will feel the same! Have a blessed day everyone Hema Viswambharan
